The multiverse fantasy epic Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the race going into the 2023 Academy Awards, having picked up 11 nominations. German war film All Quiet on the Western Front and Martin McDonagh’s black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin follow with nine nominations each.

In the performing categories, there were a number of nominations for British and Irish actors, with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon all recognised for The Banshees of Inisherin. In the best actor category, Farrell will go up against both Paul Mescal, who is nominated for his role as the troubled father in Charlotte Wells’ BFI Film Fund-backed directorial debut Aftersun, and Bill Nighy, who is recognised for the end-of-life drama Living. British actress Andrea Riseborough competes for best actress for Texas-set true story To Leslie.

Another BFI Film Fund-backed film, Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’or winning super-rich satire Triangle of Sadness gets three nominations: best picture, best director and best original screenplay, while the short film An Irish Goodbye is up for best live action short. The releases of Aftersun and All That Breathes (which is nominated for best documentary) were both supported via the BFI Audience Fund.

Mia Bays, director of the BFI Film Fund, said: “Thrilled that three fantastic films we were proud to support through the BFI Film Fund with National Lottery funding are recognised on the Oscar shortlist. The films represent the great span of what our funding does – from supporting new voices and bringing UK stories to the screen, through to ensuring the UK is represented in international co-productions of scale and ambition. A brilliant year for UK talent across the board, but particularly wonderful to see UK independent film celebrated on this global stage.”

Jerzy Skolimowski’s donkey drama EO , which is being released by the BFI in the UK on 3 February, is nominated for best international film.

Among the nominated films that first screened to UK audiences at the BFI London Film Festival are Aftersun, All That Breathes, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Argentina, 1985, The Banshees of Inisherin, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, Causeway, Empire of Light, Eo, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, Living, Triangle of Sadness, The Whale and Women Talking.

The winners will be announced on 13 March 2023.
